A-Rod: 2014 season a chance 'to rest mentally and physically'

2014-01-17=arod

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez's spokesman, Ron Berkowitz, issued a statement today clarifying some comments Rodriguez made during a public appearance in Mexico on Wednesday.
"This process has been taxing both mentally and physically throughout the past 8 months," Berkowitz said. "Alex will abide by the rulings of the federal judge — whatever he decides — and get ready for 2015 should the judge rule against him. He will continue to move forward with his complaint which will help all players against this unfair system. "
The A-Rod comments in question came at the opening of a Mexico City gym he's affiliated with.
"I think that in the year 2014, the league could have done me a favor because I've played 20 years without a timeout," Rodriguez said. "I think 2014 will be a year to rest mentally and physically prepare myself for the future and begin a new chapter of my life."
These were Rodriguez's first personal statements since the suspension was announced. He gave no hint of planning to walk away.
"I have 3 years left on my contract starting in 2015 and I hope to play very well and finish my career in New York," Rodriguez said

Oscar snubs: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis,’ Robert Redford and Oprah deserved better

When the 2014 Academy Awards nominees were announced early Thursday, all ears were attuned to the expected names. Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey and Bruce Dern given nods in their respective categories? Check.

“Gravity,” “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave” dominating nominations for acting, writing, directing and best picture? No big surprises there, and all as it should be.
Then, you cry. No nomination for Robert Redford for his astonishing one-man show in the gripping seafaring thriller “All Is Lost”? Outrage! No Tom Hanks, who delivered such a subtle tour de force in “Captain Phillips”? The nerve! No Oprah Winfrey or Forest Whitaker for their superb performances in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”? Robbed, I tell you, robbed!
No love for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” other than deserved nods for sound mixing and cinematography? (The film’s brilliantly satiric ditty “Please Mr. Kennedy” should have been a shoo-in for best original song but was deemed not original enough due to its sly nods to previous ’60s folk songs.) No “Stories We Tell” in the lineup for best documentary?
Oh, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. You exist to make us crazy.
Granted, in a year as strong as 2013, there are bound to be heartbreaks once the winnowing process begins. But Thursday’s shutouts were notable, especially the near-complete zotzing of “Saving Mr. Banks,” a paean to Hollywood studio big-footing (er, collaboration) that only earned one nomination, for original score. Emma Thompson, who many predicted would be recognized for her tart portrayal of “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers, went un-lauded, her spot presumably on permanent hold for Meryl Streep.
Still, having nominated nine films for best picture, surely the Academy could have come up with a 10th in such a strong year. What a perfect way to honor “Fruitvale Station,” Ryan Coogler’s stunning debut featuring a quietly electrifying lead performance by Michael B. Jordan — or at least “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Blue Jasmine” or “Inside Llewyn Davis.”
The day’s biggest “Huh?” came when the nominees for best original song were announced. Exactly which left field did “Alone Yet Not Alone” come from, and how did it snag a coveted Oscar nomination?
After the kvelling and the crying, the questioning begins.

Drake Bell Sets Off Twitter Feud With 'Talentless' Justin Bieber

Drake Bell

The former 'Drake & Josh' star claims Lil Za took the 'coke wrap' for Bieber after police raided his home amid the egging scandal.

It's pretty clear that Justin Bieber does not have a fan in Drake Bell.
The former "Drake & Josh" star took to Twitter on Wednesday to share with his nearly 3 million Twitter followers his thoughts on Bieber's allegedegging of his neighbor's house. The incident led to the raid of the singer's Los Angeles mansion to look for evidence, which subsequently resulted in the arrest of his friend, rapper Lil Za, for felony drug possession.
Bieber was not placed under arrest in the event. However, Bell came to his own conclusions, suggesting Lil Za was covering for Bieber. The young rapper was allegedly in possession of Molly and not cocaine as originally reported, according to TMZ.
"Hey @justinbieber how much are you paying Lil Za to take the coke wrap for ya? Be a man and take responsibility. Learn to be an ADULT!" he tweeted, later deleting his tweets, according to E! News. "@justinbieber instead of egging speeding around your neighborhood and defacing property like a little sh-- you should practice your guitar!!"
Bell, who has sparked Twitter feuds with Bieber in the past, was just getting started, as he later posted a photo of Bieber spray-painting a wall, saying "his art is almost as bad as his music."

Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw have deal

Kershaw_Clayton 131003 [203x114]

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw have agreed on a seven-year, $215 million deal, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
It is the richest deal for a pitcher in Major League Baseball history, eclipsing the seven-year, $180 million contract Detroit gave Justin Verlander last winter, and his average annual salary of $30.7 million is the highest ever for any baseball player. Kershaw will also have the opportunity to become a free agent again in five years, if he chooses.
The 25-year-old Kershaw has won two of the last three National League Cy Young Awards, as well as a Roberto Clemente Award for his charitable work.
Kershaw and his wife, Ellen, founded an orphanage in the African nation of Zambia called Hope's Home that they visit every offseason. They co-wrote a book about their experiences last winter titled, "Arise: Live Out Your Faith and Dreams on Whatever Field You Find Yourself."
Kershaw went 16-9 with a 1.83 ERA and 232 strikeouts last season, his sixth with the Dodgers. The left-hander has a 2.60 career ERA and recorded at least 212 strikeouts in each of the past four seasons.
Kershaw had recently completed a two year, $19 million deal. He filed for arbitration on Tuesday and could have become a free agent at the end of this season if the club had elected to go through the arbitration process and signed him to a one-year deal.
The Dodgers never intended to let that happen, however. A source confirmed to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Wednesday morning that they hoped to have a new contract in place for the ace before Friday's arbitration hearing.
The Dodgers have long intended to keep Kershaw as the face of their franchise for the rest of his career. The team had discussions with Kershaw and his representatives for more than a year before coming to an agreement Wednesday. The length of the negotiations was more about Kershaw's desire not to negotiate during the baseball season, a source said.
The team offered Kershaw a deal in the range of $300 million this past season, a source with knowledge of the talks told Olney in October. Although Kershaw initially was uncertain about committing to such a deal, the sides were confident that a long-term contract would be completed at some point in the offseason, according to the source.
The Dodgers drafted Kershaw seventh overall in 2006, choosing the hard-throwing high-school lefthander over future Cy Young Award winnersTim Lincecum (who went 10th overall to the Giants) and Max Scherzer (who went 11th overall to the Diamondbacks), both of whom were older, more developed college pitchers.
But the Dodgers saw something special in Kershaw, and he quickly rose through their minor league system, debuting in the majors less than two years later on May 25, 2008. During his first spring training with the club, legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully called his devastating curveball, "Public Enemy No. 1" and he quickly began drawing comparisons to another legendary Dodger lefty, Sandy Koufax.
The two have since become friends. Koufax came into the Dodger clubhouse to congratulate him after Kershaw started and won Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves on short rest this fall.
"It's gratifying that I think of him as a friend and hopefully he thinks of me the same way," Koufax said. "He's just such a good person."
The Dodgers now have five players with an average annual value of $20 million or more. Among active contracts (or contracts signed that have not yet started), the Dodgers now have five of the 22 largest average yearly salaries in the sport on the roster -- Kershaw,Zack GreinkeAdrian GonzalezCarl Crawford and Matt Kemp.

Kershaw wasn't the only Dodgers player to enjoy news of the deal. Catcher A.J. Ellis took to Twitter to congratulate the team's ace.

AFC Championship Game: New England Patriots face Denver Broncos for Super Bowl berth

Knowshon Moreno: Denver Broncos' star running back will be a key component in Sunday's match up

Zzzn cold and windy conditions while Brady put up 344 yards, three scores, and 31 points after half-time in rough conditions.
Manning v Brady XV
Very little can be said about these quarterbacks that is not already known. Broncos QB Peyton Manning, like counterpart Tom Brady, are future Hall of Famers as they both have illustrious careers behind them.
Many felt Manning's career was on the wane following his departure from the Colts, however he has put his injury problems aside and produced some of his best football in Colorado.
Manning surpassed the record for passing touchdowns in a season last month after throwing four against the Houston Texans, taking his tally to 51 for the campaign. He eventually finished with 55.
In truth, Manning was just taking back a record he set in 2004 with 49 touchdowns. Brady overtook that record with 50 during the 2007 season but now Manning has it back.
Brady has not looked back since leading the Patriots to a remarkable 20-17 success over the St Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, being one of the league's best-ever since. He also leads Manning 10-4 in the head-to-head stakes.
Running game
The Patriots hardly even needed Brady against the Colts with running back LeGarrette Blount unstoppable on the ground. Not only did he rush for 166 yards, but he also reached the end zone four times.
The Broncos will need to curb Blount's yardage if they are to harbour any hopes of taking on either San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium in February.
The Broncos spilt their running duties against the Chargers with Knowshon Moreno picking up 82 yards while Montee Ball also collected a useful 52 yards on the ground.
Missing Men
Both teams are not without notable absentees with the Patriots missing tight end Rob Gronkowski due to a torn ACL, although they have had to battle without the offensive star for much of the season.
Brady still has plenty of targets to aim for with Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola his primary receivers.
The Broncos have be shorn of the services of cornerback Chris Harris for not only this weekend's clash, but also the rest of the play-offs after he fell victim to the dreaded ACL tear as well.
He sustained the injury during third quarter of the Broncos' win over Chargers, meaning he will be given a watching brief for Sunday's clash. Denver had already lost two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Von Miller to another ACL tear.
