Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is to come out of retirement for a second time - to play in a charity match against Wimbledon's notorious 'Crazy Gang'.
Scholes is set to take to the field for the first time since hanging up his boots at the end of last season when he, and several other Red Devils greats face members of the Wimbledon FC team of the 1980s and '90s.
The former midfielder will team up with Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Dennis Irwin and Bryan Robson amongst others, while the Don's 'Crazy Gang' will be headed up by John Fashanu, Terry Phelan and Marcus Gayle.
The match will be contested at Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium, and will be played in aid of Sale-based autism charity Hearts and Minds Challenge.
Schole is a patron on the charity and Phelan, who played for Wimbledon from 1987-1992 said that the game will bring back the competitive edge of the retired professionals.
The Manchester Evening News quotes Phelan as saying: “It's going to be a wonderful experience for everybody – it's great [that] the old Wimbledon gang will be back together.
"There will be a bit of competitiveness as we are old pros and that was the Crazy Gang's way. I'm quite fit so I'm raring to go and I think most of the others have kept up their training so it should be a brilliant match.
"More importantly it will be a fun, light-hearted day where we raise money for a good cause.”
The game will be played on May 18, and will be followed up with a ticketed dinner where the players will provide guests with tales from their heyday.
Tickets are on sale now at eticketing.co.uk/bwfc.
